The list below is a practical starting point, not a promise that every current major, concentration, certificate, or delivery option is included. Degree names and admissions rules change, so use the school page and the New Jersey Office of the Secretary of Higher Education (OSHE) Program Inventory to confirm the current catalog.
Undergraduate and graduate pathways include Rutgers School of Environmental and Biological Sciences: Environmental Sciences, Ecology, Evolution and Natural Resources, Environmental Engineering, Environmental Planning, Environmental Policy, Institutions and Behaviors, Marine Science, Meteorology, Plant Science, and related agriculture and food systems majors. Rutgers School of Arts and Sciences also offers Environmental Studies, an interdisciplinary major spanning natural science, social science, methods, and humanities. Rutgers–Newark and NJIT jointly offer environmental science study, while NJIT offers B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. routes in Environmental Engineering and Environmental Science through its Civil and Environmental Engineering and Chemistry and Environmental Science departments.
Other New Jersey options include Princeton University’s environmental studies and environmental research ecosystem; Montclair State University’s Earth and Environmental Studies programs, including Sustainability Science; Stevens Institute of Technology’s Civil, Environmental and Ocean Engineering programs and sustainability management; Rowan University’s B.A. and B.S. in Environmental Science; Stockton University’s Environmental Science, Environmental Studies, Marine Science, Geology, and Sustainability programs; and related environmental, planning, engineering, and science programs at public and private colleges across the state. Community colleges can provide an affordable first two years in environmental science, engineering, horticulture, or related STEM fields before transfer.
How to use the list: start with the department that matches the work you want to do, compare required science and math, check field or laboratory opportunities, ask about transfer and financial aid, and look for faculty or community partnerships. A climate career can begin in a program that does not have the word climate in its title.
A useful way to compare programs is to name the work you want to do before you name a major. Climate analysts, field ecologists, environmental engineers, planners, teachers, public-health workers, farmers, data scientists, and organizers all use different methods. Look for the methods in a curriculum: statistics and geographic information systems for mapping, chemistry for contaminants, field sampling for ecosystems, modeling for infrastructure, writing and public engagement for policy, and design or fabrication for engineering. The word climate may be absent while the skills are present.
Research note: the OSHE Program Inventory and each institution's catalog are the authoritative places to verify an active program. University pages are useful for discovering a department, but catalogs control the current degree requirements, credit totals, delivery format, and admissions rules. Save the catalog year you used when planning an application, and ask the department what will change for the next entering class.
Experience matters alongside coursework. A student can compare a faculty lab, a campus garden, a watershed internship, a municipal planning studio, a community-engaged design course, and a paid summer position. Ask who owns the data, whether fieldwork is accessible, what safety training is provided, and whether students are paid. A community college to four-year transfer plan can reduce cost while preserving a pathway into environmental science or engineering; confirm transfer agreements rather than assuming every course will count.
For graduate study, read a faculty member's recent work and the department's methods before sending an inquiry. A strong fit may be a coastal hazards lab, an environmental justice research group, a soil and crop systems team, a transportation modeling studio, or a sustainability policy center. Students who want professional credentials should also compare internships, licensure prerequisites, teacher-certification rules, and the difference between a research thesis and a practice-oriented capstone.
